The first word revealed to the Prophet, peace be upon him, was Iqra: read (Surah Al-Alaq, 96:1). Reading sits at the heart of our tradition, and a love of books is one of the best gifts we can give our children.
That love rarely comes from lessons alone. It grows from small, steady moments at home. Here is how to build them.
Choose a fixed time
Habits attach to moments that already exist. Pick one: after Asr, after dinner, or just before bed. Fifteen minutes at the same time every day does more than an hour once a week.
Make a reading corner
It does not need to be large. A basket of books, a cushion and good light are enough. Keep books where children can reach them, with covers facing out. Rotate them every few weeks so there is always something new.
Read aloud, at every age
Keep reading aloud even after your child can read alone. Children understand stories well above their own reading level, so read-alouds build vocabulary and comprehension faster than independent reading can. They are also a chance to sit close and enjoy a story together.
Talk about every story
A few questions after reading turn a story into a lesson. Keep them simple:
- What happened first, and what happened next?
- How do you think the character felt?
- What would you have done?
- Which good quality did you notice: honesty, patience, kindness, gratitude?
This is where reading and character meet. A child who can explain why a character’s choice was right is learning both comprehension and akhlaq.
Write a little after reading
For young children, this can be a drawing with one word. For Grades 1 and 2, a sentence about their favourite part. For Grades 3 to 5, a short paragraph or a new ending. Writing about what they read fixes the story, and the new words, in memory.
Let them see you read
Children copy what they see. When they find you reading the Qur’an, a book or even a recipe, reading becomes something the family does, not only something they are told to do.
Keep it gentle
If your child resists, shorten the session rather than skip it. Let them choose the book sometimes. Praise effort, not speed. A child who feels safe making mistakes will keep trying.
